Jerry Thomas published this in his groundbreaking 1862 guide, likely to honour the first Japanese delegation to visit the United States, which lodged near his New York bar. Despite the name it contains nothing Japanese at all. Nutty, smooth and a fascinating piece of cocktail archaeology.

Ingredients
- Cognac 60 ml
- Orgeat 15 ml
- Angostura bitters 2 dash
Method

Add all ingredients to a mixing glass filled with ice.

Stir until well chilled.

Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.

Express a lemon twist over the drink and drop it in.
